There 197 runners took part in the first meeting of the 2024 Inter-Club Cross Country series. This is a series of 5 races hosted by and for the members of 5 local clubs that include Retford AC, Worksop Harriers, Clowne Road Runners, Handsworth Roadhogs and Killamarsh Kestrels.
Retford always host the first event to ensure the cows are tucked up inside the farm barns and not joining us in the race! The race starts near the junction of Grove Road and Bracken Lane and heads up the grueling muddy field slopes towards Grove, through woods and beyond for a return leg across ploughed fields before the final descent back home. With all the recent rain the course was described by many as the muddiest, energy sapping conditions they can remember, which all added to a tough course of just under 6 miles. FIrst male runner home was Samuel Roberts of Retford AC in a time of 38:03 following his silver performance in the Notts XC champs the day before. FIrst female home was Rachel Lindley of Retford AC in 45:23.
The male team score was won by Clowne and female team score by Retford AC. Clowne lead the overall scoring as the series moves to Handsworth on 21 January.
Proceeds from the races go to a club nominated local charity and thanks go to our local landowners and Retford United for the hire of their clubhouse for the pre-race gathering and post race buffet (the real reason why everyone runs the series!) A big thanks also goes to Val and her team of helpers and all the marshals who ensure that these races can go ahead.
