RETFORD AC Fell / Cross Country Section

Welcome to the Fell Running and Cross Country section of Retford AC.  This section has developed over the last 10-15 years as more senior athletes have made the move away from running on the road, preferring a more forgiving surface.  The fell running secretary is Steve Wathall who made the move from tarmac to turf after running a fell race one Saturday followed by Clowne Half Marathon (which he usually enjoyed) the following day.  The close proximity of these two races confirmed his preference for the fells and he has never raced on tarmac since.

In 1997 Steve became the 1055th person to complete the fabled Bob Graham Round of 42 Lakeland Peaks in less than 24 hours (a feat well documented by the book Feet in the Clouds – Richard Askwith).  Since then Steve has run for the club in local Peak District races, Lakeland classics and has even travelled to Nepal and New Zealand for the Everest Marathon and Kepler Challenge respectively.

The fell runners are relatively laid back and training runs tend to be a relaxed affair depending upon which races folk have got planned or whether they have run the weekend before.  Training is from Oaklands Pavilion at 7pm each Monday and Thursday evening and a five to eight mile run is usually followed by a sociable beer or two in the Rum Runner.

In 2010 we introduced a Grand Prix competition for the off road section and husband and wife team Max and Lynda Howard took the honours in the first year.  Lynda retained her trophy in 2011 but following a close fought contest, Steve Wathall got his name on the Gents’ trophy.  New recruit Peter Barr has been making his presence felt in 2012 and has already registered the two highest scores since the competition began.  He will be partnering Steve Wathall in the RAB two day mountain marathon at the beginning of October to secure his 250 MM points.

So if you fancy joining the Retford AC off roadies (affectionately known as the Dark Side) then come along any Monday or Thursday evening at 7pm.  Just to make sure that we are not away at a mid week fell race just give us a call on 07749 844212 to let us know that you are coming.  You can be assured of a very warm welcome.

Fell Running Grand Prix

Following the very successful inaugural year of the Fell Running Grand Prix we introduced a couple of changes for the 2011 year as follows:

There is an additional "Ultra" category of races being any off road race over 26.2 miles long.  These races do not need to be in the FRA handbook.
An additional one-off 250 points will be allocated to any athlete who successfully completes any two day mountain marathon.

In summary therefore:

Athletes can complete in as many fell races as they wish during the season and must let Charmian know if they wish their performance to be counted.  Scores will be calculated out of a maximum of 1000 points per race adjusted pro rata in proportion to the winning Gent/Lady on the day.

During the season Jan to Dec the best score in each of the race categories Short Medium Long and Ultra will count plus one other.

A Category L (Long) race is twelve miles (19.3k) or over

A Category M (Medium) race is six miles (9.6k) and over but under twelve miles (19.3k)

A Category S (Short) race is under six miles (9.6k)

Long Medium and Short races must be listed in the current FRA handbook to be eligible.  Please see link http://fellrunner.org.uk/races.php

In addition athletes will score 250 points for any two day Mountain Marathon and 10 points for every fell race in which they compete for Retford AC throughout the season.

GOOD LUCK and Happy Running

The Dark Lord and Max Howard went up to the Lake District on Friday night for the 42 mile Dawn to Dusk race. Before he left Steve asked me what time the race started and I said I thought it may be 7am. They drove up to Askham, registered and had a beer before getting an early night. When they got up, had breakfast and went into the hall at 6:50 it was empty - the race had started at 6am - and it was MY fault they started late!!! They had a great run though and finished in just under 12 hours
